COOLANGATTA House
The brief called for a home that connects its occupants to the elements — climate, light, and the surrounding suburban landscape. In response, the design frames views of the sky, garden, sunset, and moon, inviting natural light and breezes to animate the interior. The house is shaped around moments of light: tracking the sun through rooms and feeling the breeze on warm summer days.
Light is drawn deep into the home through carefully positioned volumes and openings. A large, north-facing periscope window captures daylight in the kitchen and dining area, where the ceiling rakes steeply down into the more intimate lounge.
The kitchen opens to a central courtyard. The interior floor level flows into a concrete bench in the outdoor dining area, which overlooks the plunge pool and garden.
In the master bedroom, the roofline mirrors that of the living space — raking upwards to allow a high-level southern window to frame sunset views.
The overall planning reflects a relaxed Gold Coast lifestyle: simple, sun-filled spaces that blur the line between indoors and out, and celebrate everyday moments of light and connection to nature.
